Training
“There is no manner of teaching comparable to the old ancient teachings, that is, first their quarters, then their wards, blows, thrusts and the breaking of thrusts, then their closes and gryps, striking with the hilts, daggers, bucklers, wrestling, striking with the foot or knee in the coddes, and all these are safely defended in learning perfectly of the gryps.” – George Silver, Paradoxes of Defence (1599)
We provide training in a principle-based fighting system designed to prioritise the safety of the practitioner above all. It is based on a variety of historical manuscripts spanning from the 15th century to the 18th century, from masters like George Silver, Joseph Swetnam, Zachary Wylde, and English longsword manuscripts such as MS Harley 3542. These sources cover a diverse range of weapons such as backsword, longsword, quarterstaff, billhook, sword and buckler, and sword and dagger. Techniques such as guards, wards, cuts, thrusts, pommel strikes, knees, kicks, footwork and grappling will create an awareness in the practitioner that the sword or staff, their edge or point are not the only weapons available. To find out more about the manuscripts we use, please click on the link.
The class curriculum includes a variety of solo and partner drills designed to improve form, structure, timing, responsiveness and spatial awareness. Practitioners are also encouraged to put there skills to the test in bouts of sparring.
